Steve Stevens rose to fame in the 1980s as the guitarist and songwriting partner for English singer Billy Idol. He has played with numerous other artists during his career, including Michael Jackson, Ric Ocasek, and Vince Neil, and was a member of the supergroups Bozzio Levin Stevens, Kings of Chaos, and Deadland Ritual. Among his other work, Stevens played lead guitar on the theme to the film "Top Gun," earning him a Grammy Award.

Early Life

Steve Stevens was born as Steven Schneider on May 5, 1959 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. He became interested in music early on in life, and first played the guitar when he was seven years old.

Work with Billy Idol

Stevens rose to fame in the early 1980s as the guitarist for English singer Billy Idol. He also played keyboards and co-wrote many songs with the artist. Backed by Stevens's monster guitar licks, Idol became a rock sensation with such hit songs as "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," and "Eyes Without a Face." After recording the singer's third studio album, 1986's "Whiplash Smile," Stevens left Idol's band.

In 1994, Stevens re-teamed with Idol to co-write and record the song "Speed," for the action thriller film of the same name. A little over a decade later, the pair recorded Idol's 2005 album "Devil's Playground." Stevens went on to record with Idol on the album "Kings & Queens of the Underground" (2014) and the EP "The Roadside" (2021).

Solo Albums

Stevens launched his solo career in 1989 with his album "Atomic Playboys." His next solo album, the primarily instrumental "Flamenco a Go-Go," was released a decade later. Stevens put out his third solo album, "Memory Crash," in 2008.

Bozzio Levin Stevens

In 1997, Stevens formed the supergroup power trio Bozzio Levin Stevens with drummer Terry Bozzio and bassist Tony Levin. Combining elements of jazz, rock, and classical music, the group mostly improvises their music in the studio. Their first album, "Black Light Syndrome," was released in 1997. That was followed by "Situation Dangerous" in 2000.

Deadland Ritual

With vocalist Franky Perez, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Matt Sorum, Stevens was a member of the short-lived hard rock supergroup Deadland Ritual. During its active years from 2018 to 2019, the group released the singles "Down in Flames" and "Broken and Bruised," and performed some live shows.

Other Musical Contributions

Stevens has played guitar for a surfeit of other artists during his career. In 1986, he appeared on Ric Ocasek's solo album "This Side of Paradise," and played lead guitar on Harold Faltermeyer's theme to the blockbuster film "Top Gun." For the latter, Stevens shared the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance with Faltermeyer. In 1988, Stevens had a guitar solo on Michael Jackson's song "Dirty Diana," and in 1990 he appeared on Robert Palmer's song "You're Amazing." Stevens went on to collaborate with the band Jerusalem Slim on its self-titled 1992 album. The next year, he played guitar on Vince Neil's debut solo album "Exposed."

In the late 1990s, Stevens began collaborating with Japanese musician and singer-songwriter Kyosuke Himuro. Their first album together was "I·De·A," released in 1997. After that, Stevens went on tour with Himuro, producing the live album "The One Night Stands." They went on to record the albums "Mellow," "Beat Haze Odyssey," and "Follow the Wind" in the early 2000s. Around this time, Stevens collaborated with guitarist Adam Bomb on his album "New York Times." In 2004, he began recording with keyboardist Derek Sherinian. Among his other collaborations, Stevens has worked with Meg Myers, Sebastian Bach, Ben Rector, David Hasselhoff, and Billy Morrison. He also performed on tour with the hard rock supergroup Kings of Chaos from 2012 to 2016.

Personal Life

Stevens is married to model, stylist, fashion designer, and reality television personality Josie Stevens. In late 2010, she starred on the short-lived E! reality documentary series "Married to Rock," with her husband also appearing.
