In September 2023 Mary sold 1,500 items from Freddie's estate at an auction that fetched just over $15 million. For example, she sold the piano with which he composed many Queen hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," for $2 million.

Mercury said of Austin in a 1985 interview, "All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary, but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary, and I don't want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that's enough for me."
Austin married artist Piers Cameron in 1990, and they welcomed two children before divorcing in 1993. Freddie was the godfather of her first child, Richard. When Mercury died in 1991, he left Austin his London home. He had told her, "You would have been my wife, and it would have been yours anyway." He was everything to me, apart from my sons. He was like no one I had met before." In April 2023, she announced that she was auctioning off hundreds of Mercury's possessions, stating, "The time has come for me to take the difficult decision to close this very special chapter in my life. I need to put my affairs in order. I decided that it wouldn't be appropriate for me to keep things back. If I was going to sell, I had to be brave and sell the lot."
