He attended Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn and originally considered following his father into medicine. He eventually changed direction and studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Hertford College, Oxford.
Guru-Murthy's broadcasting career began unusually early. At just 18, before beginning university, he became a presenter on the BBC Two youth discussion program "Open to Question."

While studying at Oxford, Guru-Murthy worked as a presenter on the BBC children's news program "Newsround." He later worked on "Newsnight" and helped launch the BBC's rolling-news channel.
