What is Jose Guillen's Net Worth and Salary?
Jose Guillen is a Dominican former professional baseball outfielder for Major League Baseball who has a net worth of $16 million. Jose Guillen played for 10 teams over his career, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Oakland Athletics, Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals, and lastly, the San Francisco Giants.
Early Life
Jose Manuel Guillen was born on May 17, 1976, in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. He was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in August 1993.
MLB Career
After playing the entire 1996 season in High-A, Guillen made his major league debut on April 1, 1997, for the Pirates and became their everyday right fielder. Guillen only played for the Pirates for two seasons when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After two injury-plagued seasons with them, he was released from the team. In December 2001, he signed on with the Arizona Diamondbacks where he only played in 54 games before being released. Guillen signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2002 but was released just three days later before playing in any games. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds in August 2002 and was traded to the Oakland Athletics. Here he became one of only six players in history to finish a 30+ home run season with fewer walks (31 home runs, 29 walks). He signed with the Anaheim Angels and hit .294 with 27 home runs and 104 RBIs before being suspended for the final two weeks of the regular season for inappropriate conduct for publicly expressing displeasure with Angels manager Mike Scioscia.
Guillen was traded to the Washington Nationals in November 2004, his sixth team in just five seasons. He played well for the team until the final year of his contract when he was diagnosed with a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and required surgery. He signed with the Seattle Mariners before the 2007 season and helped the team return to the playoffs for the first time since 2001. In December 2007, Guillen signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Royals but was suspended for the first 15 days of the 2008 season just hours after taking his physical exam. The suspension was rescinded in April after the player's association and owners agreed on a restructured drug testing program. In a game against the Texas Rangers in August 2008, Guillen was involved in a confrontation with a fan who heckled him for a lack of hustle. Coaches and teammates had to restrain Jose as the fan was removed from his seat. In May 2010, Guillen recorded his 1,500th career hit in Kauffman Stadium against the Rockies. In August, he was designated for assignment. He was traded to the San Francisco Giants but was placed on their restricted list for postseason eligibility due to his PED investigation.
Jose Guillen hit .270 with 214 home runs and 887 runs batted in over his MLB career.
Contracts & Career Earnings
After making a career-high $5 million in 2006-2007 with the Seattle Mariners, Jose Guillen signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Kansas City Royals to bring his average annual salary up to $12 million per year.
Over his MLB career, Guillan has earned $53.3 million in salary alone.
PED Controversy
Jose Guillen was linked to performance-enhancing drugs in the Mitchell Report and suspended for 15 games in 2007. He was ultimately granted amnesty like all the other players mentioned in the report. Then in 2009, he admitted working with Angel Presinal for many years, a personal trainer closely linked to PEDs who is banned from major league clubhouses. In 2010, MLB started an investigation on shipments of human growth hormone received by Guillen and directed the Giants to keep him off their postseason roster. It was revealed in November 2010 that the DEA intercepted a package of 50 HGH syringes being delivered to Guillen's home.
