Early Life
William Kenneth Alphin was born on November 1, 1963, in Culpeper, Virginia, and raised on his family's farm. When he moved to Nashville, he found work at Famous Music while he worked on his craft.
Solo Career
Before teaming up with John Rich, Big Kenny recorded the solo studio album "Live a Little" on Hollywood Records in 1999. The album was not released until 2005. His first solo single, "Long After I'm Gone" released to radio in August of 2009. Kenny was also part of the band luvjOi. He also wrote or co-wrote songs for artists such as Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Gretchen Wilson, and McBride & the Ride. As a solo artist, he also released the albums "The Quiet Times of a Rock and Roll Farm Boy"' in 2009, "Big Kenny's Love Everybody Traveling Musical Medicine Show Mix Tape, Vol. 1" in 2010, and "Electro Shine" in 2017.
Big & Rich
Big Kenny befriended former bass player and co-lead vocalist of Lonestar, John Rich, and the two founded Big & Rich in the early 2000s after years of collaboration. Big Kenny wrote and co-wrote many of Big & Rich's songs and hit singles.They released the albums "Horse of a Different Color" in 2004, "Comin' To Your City" in 2005, "Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace" in 2007, "Hillbilly Jedi" in 2012, "Gravity" in 2014, and "Did It for the Party" in 2017.
"Horse of a Different Color" featured four straight Top 40 Country hits including "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)." The album also reached No. 1 on the US Country chart and No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 3x Platinum. They also released two EPs and 10 singles, including their No. 1 hit "Lost in This Moment." After going on hiatus in 2008, they reformed in 2011 to release the single "Fake I.D." Big & Rich have been nominated for awards at the CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and CMT Music Awards.
Big & Rich founded an association for singer-songwriters called MuzikMafia that included Shannon Lawson, Cowboy Troy, and Gretchen Wilson.
Personal Life
Big Kenny married Christev Carothers in January of 2005. Christev has two sons from her prior marriage, Christopher and Cameron. Together, Kenny and Christev have a son, Lincoln William Holiday Alphin. In September of 2010, the couple announced they adopted a second son, Dakota Jefferson Holiday Alphin.
In October of 2007, Big Kenny traveled to Darfur, Sudan, to deliver educational and medical supplies. He also traveled to Akon, a remote village in Northern Bahl Ghazal in Sudan, for a similar mission along with the My Sister's Keeper group.
Big Kenny traveled to Haiti in January of 2010 to assist in rescue efforts in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.
Chateau Di Amore
In January 2007 Big Kenny and his wife Christiev purchased and proceeded to custom build a 19,000 square foot mansion in Nashville which they dubbed "Chateau Di Amore." The lavish property was listed for sale in July 2016 for $10 million. They removed the home from the market for a few years before listing again and eventually accepting $6 million in June 2021.
