Top Kpop group BTS became the most streamed artist in 2021, selected by the world’s largest audio streaming platform Spotify. On December 1, Spotify released the year-end closing data for 2021 ‘Spotify Wrapped,’ including global Kpop artists and music that recorded the most streams this year. Spotify announces global music trends throughout the year, along with various streaming records. It is part of the Wrapped campaign that settles music streaming trends every year. This year, 381 million Spotify listeners introduced various records related to Kpop. Also, Spotify introduced global artists and music that listeners enjoyed the most in 2021.
On Spotify, in 2021, the number of streams of the ten most-streamed Korean artists worldwide exceeded about 13.7 billion. This is an increase of about 29% compared to about 10.6 billion in the previous year.
Also, among Korean artists, BTS achieved the highest number of streams in 2021. BTS also ranked third in the global artist rankings after Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift. Then, Drake and Justin Bieber took fourth and fifth places, respectively. Following BTS, Kpop groups BLACKPINK, TWICE, Stray Kids, and Tomorrow X Together ranked in order in the Korean artist ranking.
Particularly, BTS swept the No. 1 to No. 4 places in the Korean music charts that recorded the most number of streams on Spotify with a total of four songs, including ‘Butter,’ ‘Dynamite,’ ‘Permission to Dance,’ and ‘Life Goes On.’
BLACKPINK’s ‘How You Like That‘ rose to #5. Then, Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driver’s License’ took first place as the most-streamed on the global music chart.
In addition, Spotify also revealed the Korean female and male groups with the highest number of streams. TWICE, ITZY, Red Velvet, and (G)I-DLE ranked in the female group category that BLACKPINK took first place. As for male groups, the ranking includes BTS, Stray Kids, Tomorrow X Together, Seventeen, and EXO as the most-streamed groups.
Furthermore, BLACKPINK Rosé ‘R’ took the top spot for the Korean solo artist single with the most streams, followed by BLACKPINK Lisa’s ‘LALISA’ in 2nd and IU’s ‘Celebrity’ in 3rd. Next, BLACKPINK’s Jennie’s ‘SOLO‘ and IU’s ‘Eight’ (Prod. & Feat. SUGA of BTS) ranked 4th and 5th, respectively.
“We were able to confirm once again that Korean artists and music are loved worldwide through this year’s ‘Spotify Wrapped’ year-end settlement. Spotify will continue to support more Korean artists to connect with fans around the world and ultimately do its best to help artists, listeners, and fans,” Spotify official said.
Meanwhile, Spotify also announced the ranking of global albums with the most streams. Following Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘SOUR,’ Dua Lipa’s ‘Future Nostalgia,’ Justin Bieber’s ‘Justice,’ Ed Sheeran’s ‘=’ and Doja Cat’s ‘Planet Her’ ranked second to fifth.
